How to Charge Your EV

Can you imagine always leaving home with a full tank of gas?

That’s what you’ll get when you install an electric vehicle charging station in your garage for your own electric vehicle. With the range of most vehicles being longer than a daily commute, there’s a good chance that the majority of your charging will be done at home. As you begin to think about buying your own charging station, you should understand the different types:

AC Level 1
These basic chargers utilize the 120 V circuit that most homes already use. By simply plugging the charger in to an existing outlet, you’ll be able to charge your vehicle. A Level 1 charger is the slowest charger with it taking up to an hour to provide 2 to 5 miles of range. If your vehicle has a range of 120 miles or more on a full battery, this means it could take up to 24 hours to get a full charge. However, if you only drive a few miles each day – this charger could be the right fit for you!

AC Level 2
These intermediate chargers require the installation of a 240 V plug in your garage with some extra equipment provided by a qualified electrician or installer. Level 2 chargers provide 10 to 20 miles of range per hour of charging. This means that a vehicle with 120 miles of range on a full battery would take 6 hours to charge. These chargers are the most typically used chargers for residential use and HomeWorks is currently providing a $600 rebate to anyone that installs one in their home.

DC Fast-Charge
The favorite chargers at public charging stations, DC Fast-Charge stations use a 480 V AC input paired with specialized charging equipment to provide the fastest charge currently available. A DC Fast Charger can provide 120 to 200 miles of range per hour of charging. This means that a vehicle with 120 miles of range can be fully charged in about an hour. These chargers are a great find when on a road trip as you’ll be nearly fully charged by the time you’ve grabbed a bite to eat. However, the extra expense typically makes them impractical in residential settings.

As you can see, there is a charger that fits every budget and purpose. By doing your research and consulting with a local electrician, you’ll be able to better understand the investment you’ll need to install your own charger at home. If you do decide to install a charger at your home, be sure to give us a call to ensure you take advantage of our rebates.
