Payment Options

Make sure you receive our emails:
To ensure our emails continue to reach your inbox, please add our email address (tricoenergy@homeworks.org) to your address book. You may also need to adjust the settings if you use a spam filter.

Automatic Bill Payment:
Sign up for our automatic bill payment program. You will receive a copy of your bill in time to question any differences, but your bank electronically transfers the amount due to HomeWorks Tri-County Electric on the due date. Call us at 1-800-562-8232 to request an application.

Pay Online with SmartHub:
Use our Pay Bill Now app, which does not require registration, or log on to SmartHub and review your current bill or your account history, and make your payment any time, day or night. You can also use the SmartHub app on your smart phone or tablet to review your account or make a payment.

By Phone:
You can make a check or credit card payment over the phone by calling our office at 1-877-999-3395.

At Our Offices:
Pay in person at either office in Portland or Blanchard; if you wish to pay by credit or debit card, we provide a self-service station inside the lobbies. We can accept cash or checks through the drive-up window. You can use the night deposit box at either office after regular office house and on weekends. For your protection, do not deposit cash in the box.

When you pay your bill by mail, send a check or money order. DO NOT SEND CASH through the mail. To help us credit your payment correctly, include the bill stub and write the account number on your check, particularly if the name on the check does not match the name on the bill.

Allow at least five days before the due date for the payment to reach our offices. When a due date falls on a weekend or legal holiday, we extend it to the next regular business day. Call either office if you want to be sure your payment has reached us.

Budget Payment Plan

With our Budget Billing plan, your monthly bill payment is levelized to a rolling 12-month average, avoiding those bad-weather months when the bill is much higher.

  • You can enroll at any time. Contact us for the budget amount, which is based on your past energy use.
  • You must have at least 12 months of usage history in your own name to qualify.
  • Sign and return the contract we send you, agreeing to pay the calculated amount.
  • Your budget amount will be reviewed and recalculated twice a year, with the new payment amount starting the following month.

We also offer several automatic payment plans that help you by paying your bill on the due date from your checking, savings, or credit card account. Avoid late fees and disconnection notices by signing up for one of these no-fee plans. Call us at 1-800-562-8232 for details.

Past Due Bills

Delinquent Bills
HomeWorks Tri-County Electric will print any past due amount or delinquent notice on your monthly bill. This notice will be located in the center portion on the left side of your statement, clearly marked with red ink. Our delinquent notice will indicate the amount past due and when payment must be received to avoid additional fees or an interruption of service. If you receive one of these notices, please contact our office immediately to arrange payment so your service will not be shut off. If your service is shut off, additional fees apply.

If You Are Unable To Pay
If you are unable to pay your bill in full, call us to make payment arrangements. If your account remains unpaid seven days after the due date, it is considered delinquent and our usual collection procedures, including notice of intent to discontinue service, will begin.

Help Paying Bills
HomeWorks Tri-County Electric encourages senior citizens and low-income customers to call us before high bills become a problem in order to be protected against loss of your utility service. We will offer suggestions to help you reduce your home energy use and put you in touch with public or private social service agencies that may be able to offer financial assistance.

Frequently Asked Questions about SmartHub (My Account)

You can access your HomeWorks account information through our SmartHub system, or you can simply click on the Pay Bill Now button to make a payment without having to register. Below is a list of frequently asked questions about SmartHub.


What is SmartHub?

SmartHub is a free application that lets you view and/or pay your monthly HomeWorks Tri-County Electric Cooperative energy bill via your computer or mobile device.

With SmartHub, you can:

  • View pdf files of your current and past energy bills
  • Pay your current bill by credit card or electronic check via Internet access
  • Check your kilowatthour usage (usually available with daily readings)
  • Connect to our office to make a service request
  • View outage status, and report an outage or service problem
  • Set up and update autopay for your energy bills
  • Visit our FaceBook page

You can save time and money by using SmartHub, since you won't have to write a check, address an envelope, buy a stamp, rush to catch the mail - or pay a late fee if you forget to mail your bill on time.

NOTE: Some electronic payment options allow you to designate a savings account as your payment source. This is NOT recommended for paying by electronic check through SmartHub; using a non-checking account could result in payment delays and late-payment fees.


Where Can I Find SmartHub?

You can get to SmartHub clicking on the "MY ACCOUNT" link at the top of any page at www.homeworks.org, or you can type https://homeworks.smarthub.coop/ into your browser's address box. It's also available as an app for your smart phone or tablet on the App Store or at Google Play.

How do I sign up to use SmartHub?

At the opening screen, there is an area for users who have already registered to log in. Below that, there are two other links. If you have not yet signed up to use SmartHub, select "New User?Sign up to access our Self Service site." You'll be asked to provide your account number, last name, and an email address. Select the Submit button to complete your registration. Use the Reset button to clear the entry fields if you need to start over.

If you're already registered but can't remember your password, or have some other difficulty in logging in, select "Can't access your account?" You'll be asked to provide your account number, last name, and the email address you used to create your log-in.

What do I do if I make a mistake typing my email address when I sign up?

This happens, and it's easy to correct by calling us during business hours at 1-800-562-8232. We can update the email address on file for you.

Will I still receive a paper bill each month by U.S. Mail?

You can if you choose. You will be asked by SmartHub if you would prefer not to receive the paper bill. We encourage you to help us save money and the environment. Your past bills are available through SmartHub as easily-downloadable pdf files if you want to save a copy for your records.


What kind of password do I have to use?

There are two restrictions: a range of 4 to 10 characters, and the system is case-sensitive. If you capitalize a letter when you set your password, you will need to capitalize it every time you enter it in the future. (Example: if we used HomeWorks as our password, using HOMEWORKS, Homeworks, and homeworks to log back in would all get error messages.)

To provide the best password security, we recommend that you use at least 8 characters and a combination of letters, numbers, and/or punctuation.


Can I bookmark SmartHub in my favorites list?

Bookmarking your SmartHub site into your Favorites list (after you're logged in) won't work because of the security used to keep SmartHub and your account information safe. You can bookmark the log-in page, but you will need to log in for each session.


Understanding cookies

Some Web sites store information in a small text file, called a "cookie," on your hard disk.

Cookies contain information about you and your preferences. For example, if you inquire about a flight schedule at an airline's Web site, the site might create a cookie that contains your itinerary. Or it might only contain a record of which pages within the site you visited, to help the site customize the view for you the next time you visit.

Only the information that you provide, or the choices you make while visiting a Web site, can be stored in a cookie. For example, the site cannot determine your e-mail name unless you choose to type it. Allowing a Web site to create a cookie does not give that or any other site access to the rest of your computer, and only the site that created the cookie can read it.

Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, and other popular browsers handle cookies and permissions differently.


What if I have more than one Tri-County account?

SmartHub automatically searches our database for the account number you entered. Once the account is found, any other account that shares the same Capital Credit number and same main address will also be updated with this email address and password, giving you access through the account summary page. Your Capital Credit number is unique to your membership, and all your account numbers are tied to that Capital Credit number.

However, if your accounts have different, account-specific main addresses, you will need to register each one separately.


What if I use other HomeWorks products and services; can I use SmartHub for Tri-County Propane or Internet?

SmartHub gives you access to Tri-County Electric account information as well as copies of your Tri-County Propane and High Speed Internet bills. We'll let you know if and when anything changes.


When will the payment I make be charged to my credit card or checking account?

It can take anywhere from a couple of hours to a business day or two for your payment to be debited against your account, depending on the credit card company or bank.


When will my payment be posted to my Tri-County account? When will I be able to see it on this website?

Your payment should be credited to your Tri-County account no later than the next business day (Monday through Friday), and your updated account should then appear on SmartHub.


What if I want to have my bill paid automatically each month?

Just call us at 1-800-562-8232 and we can set you up on either our electronic banking program, or on automatic monthly credit card payments. You can do it yourself in SmartHub: go to Billing & Payments, Auto Pay Accounts, and click on "Sign Up for Auto Pay."


If I'm already on an automatic payment plan, can I still use SmartHub? Can I use SmartHub even if I don't want to pay online?

Yes, you can always use SmartHub as a way to view your bills, check your payments, and view your past energy use. You do not have to pay via SmartHub to use it.


What do I do if there's a problem?

Contact us at tricoenergy@homeworks.org. Describe the situation completely, and include your name, address, account number, and email address. We will make every effort to reply to emails within one business day (and usually much sooner.)

Or, call 1-800-562-8232 during business hours (Monday - Friday, 8 am - 5 pm, except holidays) for assistance.


How secure is my account information?

We have taken the following steps to ensure that your information is secure and your privacy is respected:

Secure Socket Layer (SSL) technology
Using SSL guarantees that any transmissions of your information to or from our server will be encrypted. Any interception of your information on the Internet will be impossible for the intruder to read.

Hosting our site on secure servers
Our Internet-compliant web servers are configured with appropriate security so that intruders cannot see any activity done by you or our application.

Data on your account is secured in a system behind a firewall
Your actual billing account information is stored on auxiliary machines protected by a network firewall that will not allow any unauthorized access from the Internet to occur.

Protecting your account information through a secure log on process
The only way you are allowed to access your billing account information is by providing your E-mail address and a password that you have personally set up with our SmartHub site.


What is your privacy policy?

HomeWorks Tri-County Electric Cooperative will not share your account information with anyone not named on the account, except in very specific circumstances, in which case you would be given advance notice.


Will I receive email from HomeWorks if I sign up?

The only time you should receive email from us would be under one of these three conditions:

  • a monthly notification from SmartHub that your current bill is ready for viewing
  • a reply to any email you send us; or
  • if at some future date we offer an email newsletter or notification service, and you request to be included on the mailing list.

Will you sell my email address to other businesses so that I get junk email?

No. Your account information has always been kept confidential under Tri-County Electric rules, unless we are subpoenaed for specific information through a court of law. Your email address will also be kept confidential.

Earned Income Credit
Contact: U.S. Treasury Department, Internal Revenue Service (irs.gov/EITC) 800-829-3676 (for tax forms)
Contact: Michigan Department of Treasury (michigan.gov/treasury).

The Earned Income Credit (EIC) is a refundable federal income tax credit for low-income working individuals and families who meet certain requirements and file a tax return. Those who qualify will owe less in taxes and may get a refund. Even a person who does not generally owe income tax may qualify for the EIC, but must file a tax return to do so. If married, you must file jointly to qualify. File Form 1040 or 1040A and attach the EIC.

You may claim a Michigan earned income tax credit for tax year 2016 equal to a percentage of the federal earned income tax credit for which you are eligible. Visit michigan.gov/treasury or see the 2016 Michigan tax booklet for details.

Home Heating Credit*

You can apply for a Home Heating Credit for the 2016 tax year if you:

  • meet the income guidelines (see below), or
  • you qualify based on alternate guidelines including household income, exemptions, and heating costs.
  • Additional exemptions are available for seniors, disabled claimants, or claimants with 5% or more of their income from unemployment compensation.

If you qualify, you may receive assistance to help pay for your winter heating bills. Forms are available in mid- to late-January wherever tax forms are provided, or from the Michigan Department of Treasury (517-636-4486, or www.michigan.gov/treasury.) The Home Heating Credit claim form must be filed with the Michigan Department of Treasury no later than September 30 each year.

Crisis Assistance Program
Contact: Local Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (county offices are listed in your local telephone book) or their website (michigan.gov/mdhhs).

State Emergency Relief Program (SER)
You do not have to be a client of the Department of Health and Human Services to apply for help with a past due bill, shutoff notice or the need for deliverable fuel through the SER to apply. This program, available Nov. 1-May 31, provides most of its utility assistance during this crisis season. However, limited assistance is available outside the crisis season. If you receive a DHHS cash grant, you may vendor part of that grant towards heat and electric bills. Contact your local DHHS or call the Home Heating Hotline, 855-275-6424.

Low-Income Home Weatherization
Contact: Local Community Action Agency; visit mcaaa.org to find one in your area.

You may be able to receive help with weatherizing your home to reduce energy use if you meet low-income eligibility guidelines (200% of poverty guidelines, as listed below) and funding is available. Weatherization may include caulking, weather-stripping, and insulating. Contact your local Community Action Agency for more information.

United Way
Contact: Call 2-1-1 or UWmich.org/2-1-1

2-1-1 is a free phone service operating 24 hours per day, providing callers with information about resources that may be available in their particular area to help with utilities and other needs. Learn more at UWmich.org/2-1-1.

Medical Emergency Protection
Contact: HomeWorks Tri-County Electric Cooperative at 800-562-8232

You are protected from service shut-off for non-payment of your electric bill for up to 21 days, possibly extended to 63 days, if you have a proven medical emergency. You must provide written proof from a doctor, public health or social services official that a medical emergency exists.

Shut-off Protection for Military Active Duty

If you or your spouse has been called into active military duty, you may apply for shut-off protection from your electric service for up to 90 days. You may request extensions. You will still be required to pay, but we will help you set up a payment plan.

Winter Protection Plan
Contact: HomeWorks Tri-County Electric Cooperative at 800-562-8232

The Winter Protection Plan protects eligible senior and low-income customers from service shut-offs and high utility bill payments during the winter months (Nov. 1 – March 31). You may enroll between Nov. 1 and March 31. If you are an eligible low-income customer, your utility service will remain on from Nov. 1-March 31, if you:

  • pay at least 7% of your estimated annual bill each month, and
  • make equal monthly payments between the date you apply and the start of the next heating season on any past due bills.

When the protection period ends (March 31), you must begin to pay the full monthly bill, plus part of the amount you owe from the winter months when you did not pay the full bill. Participation does not relieve customers from the responsibility of paying for electricity use, but does prevent shut-off during winter months. You qualify for the plan if you meet at least one of the following requirements:

  • you are age 65 or older,
  • you receive Department of Human Services cash assistance, including SSI,
  • you receive Food Assistance,
  • you receive Medicaid, or
  • your household income is at or below the 150% of poverty level shown in the Income Guidelines chart below.

Senior citizen customers (65 or older) who participate in the Winter Protection Plan are not required to make specific payments to ensure that your service will not be shut off between Nov. 1 and March 31. However, you are encouraged to pay whatever you can during the winter so you will not have large, unmanageable bills when the protection period ends.

The Trust Fund provides temporary assistance to veterans and their families facing a financial emergency or hardship including the need for energy assistance.

MI Energy Assistance Program

or call 2-1-1 in late November

Agency assistance through MEAP, which includes services that will enable participants to become self-sufficient, including assisting participants in paying their energy bills on time, budgeting for and contributing to their ability to provide for energy expenses, and being energy-efficient. Shut-off protection is provided Nov. 1 - April 15 for all residential customers (regardless of income).
